Taylor Hanson blames Mmmhops beer for his own 'The Hangover' experience

Taylor Hanson has revealed that he had his very own The Hangover moment this week.

The 30-year-old lead singer of Hanson found himself on the roof of a hotel in Los Angeles following a night on the band's own branded beer.

The musician shared his encounter via Instagram in a post which showed the pool area with a view of the city's international airport in the distance.

"Somehow I am here..good morning LAX.@Mmmhopsbeer I blame you..and thank you," he captioned the shot.

The image is reminiscent of the moment in the original Hangover movie when groom Doug Billings (Justin Bartha) is found sleeping on a roof before he is due to get married.

Hanson's first single 'Mmmbop' features at the start of The Hangover Part III, and they provided a sample batch of the beverage to attendees of the film's Hollywood premiere in May.

Last week the group, which also features Isaac Hanson and Zac Hanson, played to an almost sold-out crowd at the House of Blues venue on West Hollywood's famous Sunset Strip.

Their 'Anthem World Tour' will arrive in the United Kingdom in December.

Everything may seem just fine in the world of Hanson these days -- and things are going reasonably well for the trio of brothers.

The group's latest CD, "Anthem," has been released and Hanson is starting the first leg of a North American tour that visits theaters and large clubs -- including Friday night's date at the Depot in Salt Lake City.

What's more, "Anthem" is a particularly cheery album, full of the kind of pop-rock -- ahem, anthems -- that should have audiences singing and clapping along to the songs.

The tone of "Anthem" is especially striking considering what happened about a year ago.

"I think this record was an interesting one because we really reached a point in 2012 where this record almost didn't get made," Zac Hanson said in a mid-August phone interview. "It was the first time, really ever, we had come up against a challenge that was maybe bigger than this band, in the sense of it was hard to overcome, just personal, not taking care of what's most important. And you do something long enough, you begin to take those relationships with each other, the things that come so easily for so long, for granted."

Noting that he and his brothers, Isaac and Taylor, aren't the type to air their dirty laundry in public, Hanson didn't delve into ugly details, but it's clear that the normal sibling harmony had gone off key.

"I think the best way to say it is just we became overworked," Hanson said, noting the time invested into various Hanson business concerns had taken a toll. "We run the (record) label. We manage ourselves. We produce the records. All the projects we do in addition to music, and things like Take the Walk (a charitable effort by the band), all the merchandise, and we're starting a beer company, all of those things (were happening). And then if you do all of those things and then you get to go do the music, but the music is sort of burdened by all of those things, your relationship is burdened by all of the stresses of everything around you.

"You haven't taken the time to sort of clean the closet, do the spring cleaning. Then it was just sort of emotionally explosive," he said. "There wasn't a lot of care given to each other. It wasn't one moment or one thing or one disagreement. It was really an overall sense that the music wasn't getting the emotional energy. We weren't taking the time for the music because it had somehow, one way or another, become that extra thing. 'Oh no, we've got to go do the music.' So it was sort of a hard reset."

The brothers decided to take last summer off, take stock of things and see if they could repair the problems for the group. Hanson said things never reached a point where they thought of ending the group they started in Tulsa, Okla., as kids.

"I won't say that we didn't think about that just because you're always thinking about the future and different projects and things," Hanson said. "But I think what we came to was this wasn't a decision that any of us were happy with. Even when you're struggling, when you have a great history and great relationship and a working experience together that's so good, you're kind of going, 'OK, I know something is a little wrong right now, but it's worth figuring out how to fix this.' "

When the summer 2012 was over, the three brothers returned with renewed purpose, and Hanson thinks that feeling translates into the "Anthem" album.

"There was really a sense when we came back together that we were fighting for this band, that as a unit, we were all ready to sort of start again," he said. "You hear it in the music. So many of the songs, I think, are about, songs like 'Already Home,' which is about saying look around you. You're already there. You've already got what matters. Or, 'You Can't Stop Us,' which is fighting for what you believe in and not letting anything get in your way."

That spirit extended to the music on "Anthem," which predominantly is populated by songs like "Fired Up," "You Can't Stop Us" and "Cut Right Through Me" with big guitars, big pop hooks and big choruses.

"Calling the record 'Anthem' was really us looking back at those songs after we put it together and going 'These songs are bigger. There's a bigger sound to it,' " Hanson said. "Whether they're someone else's anthem yet, they're an anthem for us. The messages of these songs are our messages, so we can declare these song anthems because they're already a battle cry for who we are as a band."

Who Hanson is musically tends to change a bit from album to album, Hanson said, and that's been consistent throughout a career that took off in 1997. That's when the three brothers, then ranging in age from 11 to 16, released their first major label album, "Middle of Nowhere." Featuring the smash single, "MMMBop," the album sold nearly 4 million copies in the United States alone and immediately made the Hanson brothers teen pop stars.

Unlike many such acts, though, the three brothers all played instruments and wrote their own songs. As they've grown older and continued to release albums and tour, the music has matured and Hanson has met the difficult challenge escaping their teen pop beginnings and becoming a band of adults (all three brothers are married and have kids) with a legitimate long-term music career. And over the course of the five studio albums that have followed "Middle of Nowhere," Hanson has continued to expand on the pop-rock sound that the group established on that first album. Not surprisingly, "Anthem" has a different musical personality from the previous Hanson album, 2010's "Shout It Out."

" 'Shout It Out,' was very piano-driven, and so I think what happened (on 'Anthem') was there was just this comeback of the guitar," Hanson said. "The guitar rose again, and with that, there were a lot of riffs and driving melodies.

"I think you see over a career, from our first album to our second album and then our third album, and it sort of, you see a little more blues and rock, then you see a little more R&B and pop, you see a little more blues and rock," he said. "There are certain qualities we can't get away from about the way we like to write songs. There's a pop quality, a singable, I think, quality to what we write that even in our most R&B or most rock, we still like to write a chorus that people will remember. We're not a very prog rock band. There's just not much of that in our influences. But this is definitely, instead of being primarily influenced by Otis Redding, there's a little more AC/DC in this record."

The sound of "Anthem" has Hanson excited about the group's current tour of the U.S. and Canada, which runs through Nov. 20. Hanson noted that while new material will be featured, the group will play songs going back to "MMMBop" in its show.

"So much of this record was written really thinking about the live experience," he said. "This album, even more than others, we wrote these parts where you really heard, 'Oh man, it's going to be awesome when the audience sings "You Can't Stop Us" or claps along right there.' And so, I'm particularly excited to hear this music with the audience."

You'd be forgiven for thinking the words "Hanson beer" sound a little hokey together. After all, when those words initially started rolling out in the press almost two years ago, back before the band of brothers had formulated much of a plan or even landed on the style they'd ultimately brew, it seemed more like an offhanded interview comment (or an upcoming marketing gimmick) than an actual business plan. It would be another year and a half before the beer, an American Pale Ale called Mmmhops, would make its debut at The Hangover Part III's Los Angeles premiere party this past May. (The song from which the beer takes its name, Hanson's 1997 pop smash, "MMMBop," was featured on the soundtrack, and the makers of the song posed for photos with stars from the movie on the beer's Twitter account. Yes, the beer has a Twitter account.) Not much has happened since.

I decided to investigate. I sent a few emails, then made a few phone calls, then, two Sundays ago, braved an intimidating "Red Rover" situation with a long and winding line of Hansonites that stretched from the front door of Variety Playhouse, all the way back down the alley between the venue and El Myr, snaking around the outskirts of the parking lot, then halfway back up to Euclid Ave. I was on a mission. I was going to drink Mmmhops with Hanson.

"This is an endeavor on its own. It's not a promotional thing," drummer Zac, 27, says as we crack open a few bottles backstage. "We're not, like, making some up, having it on tour, then next year you won't see it. It's about taking the right steps, not moving too fast."

The Hansons are a friendly bunch without coming off as too polished or cheesy. They act like goobers in a way that three still-relatively-young brothers who hang out every day might act like goobers. They have plenty of handlers, but none flutter around while we drink beer and chat.

Mmmhops pours a light amber color with medium head. It's neither particularly fragrant or bitter, though there's some bready sweetness on the nose. Tastewise, it's a very balanced pale ale, much heavier on the malts than its name implies. (Play-on phrases aside, they probably should've bestowed the "Mmmhops" moniker on something a little more "mmmhoppier," as it were.) The Hansons have talked it up as a "craft beer gateway drug," which is a pretty fair assessment of this 7.5 percent ABV brew.

Like many bands, Hanson got a taste for craft beer on the road. Coming of age in a distinctly different environment than most American beer drinkers, the trio were less inclined to sneak booze and behave badly. They could have easily had a beer at a festival or show if they really wanted one. As a result, they started trying regional craft varieties in different towns, finding a taste for Sierra Nevada, Oskar Blues, Three Floyds, and New Belgium along the way.

"You're touring around the country, and you come into a city, and people go, 'Have you tried our beer?'" Zac says. "Especially in the size of venues we're usually playing - places like 1,200-2,500 seats. You're not playing the big Clear Channel arena, the hockey place. People who live in that community, places like this, Little Five Points, they love their local beer."

While they've never homebrewed themselves, under the influence of "a very good friend and longtime tech," they became interested in the science, reading up as they tried new IPAs and stouts. The band's done limited runs of chocolates and coffee in the past for super fans, but something about beer felt egalitarian enough that they should make it in a bigger way.

"The idea of doing a beer is like the great connector," singer Taylor, 30, says. "It's the equalizer. Our parents' church friends and our hip-hop remixer friends are all like, 'I'll drink your beer.' It bridges all people. What's cool about it is that it allows us to say something about ourselves without saying it."

"Perez Hilton and Jay Leno are both drinking our beer," guitarist, Isaac, 32, adds.

Enamored with their home state of Oklahoma's Mustang Brewing Company, the Hansons met with Mustang brewer Gary Shellman and started experimenting with recipes. They loved the first batch, but made it hoppier on a subsequent try, experimented with different types of barleys, tried dry hopping at one point, messed with the formula a bit longer, then decided they'd nailed it on the first try. Since Mustang isn't far from their native Tulsa, they even helped out on brew days, carrying sacks of grain and getting their hands dirty.

"When we first started [thinking about beer], we were like, should we just find a great company, license it, and hand it off?" Zac says. "But we realized that's not where we wanted to be. It's just way too much fun and too important for us. We wanted to find a partner close to home, and just like when you go to San Diego, you go to Stone. You get that trek to the place where it's from. It's from your backyard. If you're in downtown Tulsa, bartenders and bar owners know us by first name. Our beer is going to be in those bars."

Fittingly, the band turns 21 this year. Asked if timing the beer's release to the band's legal drinking age was a purposeful move, there's a brotherly quibble.

"It was by chance," Zac says.

"I wouldn't say it was completely by chance," Taylor counters.

"What I mean is," Zac says, "we started talking about the beer for the first time two years ago, but - "

" - I will say this," Taylor interrupts. "We really wanted it to come out this year - "

" - because of that," Isaac finishes the sentence.

"That's one more reason," Taylor says. "'Come on. We're 21. If it's gonna happen, let's get it done this year. We're never going to be 21 again. Let's make it happen.' We've been making stupid jokes about it ever since."

The brothers are striving to have the beer in 10 states this year, and are optimistically hoping to even have it available at some some shows later in their current tour. (Various state laws and permits have gotten in the way so far.) Every bottle will have a QR code on its neck that links the drinker to a downloadable song, and a portion of every beer sold will contribute to clean water wells in Africa. They're calling Mmmhops the flagship of what could become an ongoing project with subsequent beers, assuming their fans are as into it as much as the Hansons think they'll be.

"You kinda get addicted to the idea of creation, of ownership," Zac says. "My flavor, my take on the world. I think the beer, in so many ways, is an extension of that. Beer and music, obviously, go really well together. It's a great companion for what we already do and love. It's a new creative outlet, a new business to tackle and be challenged by. It's exciting. If you're a craft brewery in America, you're a little guy, you're busting your butt. We've run our label for the last 10 years. It's the same thing. You're not getting rich tomorrow. You're up against that guy who has a million more dollars to spend than you do, and you've got to find a way to break through the clutter."

Interview: Catching Up with Hanson

Hanson play tonight at Workplay with Paul McDonald.

Family bands have played a major role in music history. The Bee Gees, The Osmonds, Kings of Leon, The Neville Brothers and The Staple Singers are but a few notable artists that have contributed to this list. Brother act Hanson (Zac, Isaac and Taylor) took the ‘90s airwaves by storm, charting hits and garnering Grammy nominations along the way. On Monday, September 9, Hanson will perform at Workplay Theatre with Alabama native – and former American Idol contestant – Paul McDonald opening the 8 p.m. show. Currently, Hanson is touring in support ofAnthem, the band’s recently-released record on its own label, 3CG Records. Recently, we caught up with Zac Hanson by phone.

Brent Thompson: Zac, thanks for your time. We are looking forward to having you guys back in Birmingham.

Zac Hanson: My wife’s from Tuscaloosa, so it’s always nice to play in Birmingham. We go back to that area for the holidays every year, so it feels like a home away from home.

BT: You guys are still based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It seems like more artists are able to live in their hometowns these days in lieu of having to relocate to the traditional music hubs.

ZH: We started our [record] label in 2003 and Prince and The Rolling Stones were the only ones doing it – it was really sparse. Our friends would say, “What are you guys doing?” but the market is really changing for records and the way fans are buying – or I should say not buying – has definitely evolved. There’s this reach that you never had before that becomes a powerful tool for independent artists. A lot of people are just tired of being a commodity.

BT: Along that same line, some artists tell me the accessibility of modern outlets is great and some tell me it’s a challenge given that anyone can put out musical content now.

ZH: Unfortunately, both are true. There’s this amazing tool – and I’m Skyping you from Canada right now because we are on tour – you can record anything you want anywhere and there’s a level of quality that you just couldn’t get when we started. We saw the very last tail-end of the analog music business. People don’t have to risk anything or spend any money to become a fan. They can search for it on Google or Pandora – it requires bands to work harder. There’s not just one outlet where you can reach 20 million people. But we are out here to build something.

BT: I understand you guys have even created your own beer brand now [Mmmhops] as well. How did that idea come about?

ZH: We are always looking for the next creative thing and we never looked to be part of a trend. We are a garage band from Oklahoma and the beer is one more avenue. You travel the country and see these craft beers – you just become fans of it. We started working on it and it will be available this fall.

Zac Hanson Won't Perform For Any "Drunk B*tch!" Watch Him Bring The 'Tude HERE!

In case anyone questioned the sass of the trio of bros that make up Hanson, think again!

The generally sweet Zac Hanson performed one of the most adorbzies Hanson songs EVER, Lulabelle — that is, until he was RUDELY interrupted by a rowdy audience member!

While fans generally take in the precious song about a little girl in silence, one woman in the Richmond, Virginia crowd yesterday shouted out, "I want to lick your taint!"

LOL-worthy??! Zac didn't think so!

The youngest Hanson responded:

"Seriously? I'm singing this beautiful song about a little girl and this drunk bitch is screaming… You can go home! I'm going to start that verse over so the rest of us can enjoy it."

OUCH. Burn! But a well-deserved burn indeed!

We actually might've just fallen a bit deeper in love with him. Who doesn't love a man that stands up for himself??!
